Tallahassee observed Memorial Day on Monday, with several events in remembrance of the nation's fallen military members.
The day began with former Congressman Al Lawson and numerous local leaders decorating gravesites at the Greenwood Cemetery. The local VFW Post held its ceremonies at the post cemetery off Crawfordville Road. And American Legion Post 13 shifted its event from the Oakland Cemetery to the Post home to escape the rain. The names of the 13 who have died in the Iran War were read, patriotic songs were sung, and Post Adjutant, Shirley Combass, U.S. Army retired, gave a keynote speech to stress that women also die in service to their country.
"And I know that women often don't get the recognition that I think they deserve. And I happen to be in several different veterans' organizations, and I always like to speak up for the women."
